YANRAN BI (she / her)

YB51724
Performance, String Instrument, Light
2024

YB51724 is a self-designed and fabricated sound and light instrument. Taking inspiration from Thomas Wilfred’s Lumia Art and two traditional Chinese string instruments, the piece would trigger planetary light projections when the strings are touched. It is an exploration of the soft ambiences(sound, light, time…) in an environment and an imagination of a abstract landscape of its own.

Yanran Bi is an interdisciplinary artist and composer. Her work spans a range of outputs, including locative audio experiences, interactive installations/instruments, and performances/exhibitions. Through these mediums, she creates poetic experiences that give form/texture to the intangible/ungraspable aspects within the entanglement of culture, landscape and time.  Her practice is often site-specific, immersing herself in environments to examine and extract the subtle ambiances of space—sound, light, memory, spirit—and weaving them into imagined propositions.

Kit Orion will be joined by Matt Freake and Iarla O'Halloran as a band in performing 3 songs off of her upcoming album, "Bottle Grin". Each song was written as a response to prompts for a songwriting club that was created by friend and collaborator, Jessica Kion (Justice Cow), during COVID. This songwriting experience fostered a safe space to experiment, to be held accountable and ultimately led to her first EP release in 2021, and now the upcoming album release in October of this year.

Caitlyn created these songs using samples, found sounds, synths, various instruments and programming drums before inviting friends into the studio to contribute additional live performances blending her soundscapes with live instrumentation.

Each song was Written, Performed and Produced by Caitlyn O'Brien.
