Patterned Behavior

Interactive Public Artwork Transforming Pedestrian Movement Into Light and Sound

Patterned Behavior is an interactive public artwork that transforms Union Square Park’s Pavilion and North Plaza into a responsive instrument of light and sound. It is intended as a welcoming counterpoint to the city’s energy; an immersive, meditative environment that animates the static structure of the pavilion against the improvisation of pedestrian activity.

In the public space, movement, steps, pauses, and gatherings activate illumination and tones that ripple across the architecture, revealing the hidden rhythms of this historic urban site. By sensing activity in the plaza, the installation translates human presence into an evolving composition.

Whether encountered in passing or as a destination, the work is completed through participation, inviting the public to experience the plaza as a living score shaped by collective movement.
