VOL. 02  //  SHARING OUR STORY  //  AUGUST 2020

Hello Friends,

What a world we live in! Even through the haze, we find clarity in living in it and adding to it with YOU. We hope you are well, healthy, and strong. We can not complete our work without you.

We continue to be grateful to be busy as a studio and grow personally and collectively. We will focus on what we are up to both internally, externally, and who we are supporting from afar and in our community.

Thank you for reading, engaging in our story, our art, and the people and ideas that we talk about here; It is truly felt. Let us know what you think and if you feel inclined, share our work with your neighbors and friends. If you want more, follow us on this thing called instagram @masary_studios.

Here is Light Reading Volume 2.

V E S S E L S

VESSELS has been a ride. The 6 week installation has been deinstalled, but we are pleased to share that we will be back in New Bedford next Summer 2021 for an outdoor performance in and around VESSELS.

We are grateful for the community, the presenting body DATMA, and all of the supporters involved. To be able to create public artwork NOW, in this landscape has felt so special and important. The responses from the community and viewers echoe that and inspire us to keep going.

Most recently, Lindsay Mis of DATMA sat down with Jared Bowen of WGBH Open Studios to discuss VESSELS, Light 2020, New Bedford and more. The section starts at about 8 min if you want to jump forward. Click HERE to watch.

As we reflect on these past few months, we will also be editing an at-home in situ version of the site specific 3 part installation for those that have not been able to experience it in person.

Apprenticeship: Allston 3D

We are proud and excited to show you the result of the first phase of our apprenticeship with Caleb Hawkins. He worked with Samo to learn projection mapping and created a pop-up style projection. See the work below!

Art News - Intangible Forms

Our freinds at Artechouse presented a stunning piece by Shohei Fujimoto this past February. The centerpiece installation uses laser and haze to create a conversation between inanimate objects and living beings.

Allston 3D

The result of the first phase of our apprenticeship with Caleb Hawkins. Caleb comes from an architectural and creative tech background at Harvard GSD which resulted in a natural transition to the concept of projection mapping and working in a 3D software environment.

For this project, he created a 3D model from scratch, crunched the math for the projector to canvas calculation, began to learn Cinema 4D, brushed up on new After Effects techniques, conceptually approached the site, and began to learn Resolume Arena in order to create building specific animations and project them back onto the real building facade itself.

The piece was presented pop-up style, announcing day-of on our instagram. About 40 people arrived to experience the piece at a safe distance together. It was a beautiful night inside and out and was capped off by the police being called only to show up and express their appreciation for the work.

Phase 2 and 3 are underway with Caleb. We are excited to see what comes out of it.

PROTEST PROJECTIONS
We are proud that the Protest Projections that Samo and Caleb have been activating in and around our home city were featured in the Boston Globe.  Article LINK here.

We continue to project around our city with Protest Projections - this time with the help from Mac Pierce to help with a wireless setup and the support and eduction from JRB & her crew.

Introducing our new Studio Manager Julia Ruiz Borys

JRB's professional background comes from experience and studies in business, media, conceptual art, and experience design. They are a great fit and we have had a lot of fun getting to know her and building her into the team.  We are thrilled to grow the relationship with her and the big role she is taking on at MASARY Studios.

MASARY'S RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT

The S/Lab (pronounced "S. Lab" or "Slab") is the research department of MASARY studios. Within the S/Lab, we create and develop new ideas that don't yet have a home in a given project. With the S/Lab, we're to expand the capabilities of MASARY, experimenting with new ideas, developing new tools and methods which may, one day, find their way into our publicly-presented work.

The inaugural S/Lab research project focuses on developing real-time, artificial intelligence (A.I.) driven image generation systems. Building on published research of the last five years, we're building a way to teach an A.I. agent to generate video and imagery based on the images we feed it. Thus far, we've seen some mind-bending, alien-like images and animations coming from the A.I.
CANNON OF LOVE

We continue to grow with open hearts. MASARY principal Ryan Edwards and his partner Sarah Hoyt were hitched this July on Nantucket, MA! It was a small intimate celebration on the ocean front, as they looked their best selves and fired away an island traditional cannon, booming with love, joy, smiles, and laughs. We love Sarah, her support of MASARY, and her spirit. We couldn't be happier for both of them. Sunrise celebrations to come!

Communication & Community

We wanted to showcase a few local organizations that have helped our communities continue to grow and we think you should support. Communication and community keeps us together. Frugal Bookstore, Urbanity Farming Institute, and Villside Customs all play a different role in keeping Boston connected through what they do. Please consider supporting them in an effort to support each-other.

Frugal Bookstore
Boston’s only black-owned community bookstore, found in Roxbury, has all the books you could and should read during these trying times. Please note: they’ve luckily had high demand and many books need to be restocked by publishers, so be patient if you do order from them.

Urban Farming Institute
Based in Mattapan, has been helping promote urban farming all over Boston, giving people access to fresh produce and fostering a healthy connection to food, which is so necessary especially in places where food deserts still exist.

Villside Customs
A black-owned print shop in Somerville, provides almost any custom print work you could dream up. You can order T-shirts with your face on them for all your friends and/or family members in case they miss you. You can order yourself a hat that says “time to rock and roll,” or you can promote your own business while supporting a local neighbor business.

"What side of history are you on?"
